When to go

The tour runs year-round in any weather. Daylight hours give you the best views of the architecture; winter evenings add a fitting atmosphere to the darker stories. Note that in December it's dark by 3:30pm.

What to wear

Sturdy, comfortable shoes are essential — the route includes cobblestones, steep inclines, and steps. Always bring a waterproof layer. Edinburgh's weather changes quickly, even in summer.

Getting there
